Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw opened as the first Welsh-medium comprehensive school in the old county of Gwent in 1988 and since that time it has grown to 800 pupils. The school is located on the outskirts of Pontypool, with its catchment area covering three counties: Torfaen, Monmouth and Blaenau Gwent.
We are therefore looking forward immensely to open as an all age school (3-18) from September 2022. We will begin with nursery and reception year groups and will then grow to full capacity by September 2028.
The ethos at Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw is a special one with 95% of pupils coming from non-Welsh speaking homes. “Welshness”, or Cymreictod as it is affectionately called in the Welsh Language therfore, is an essential element which is incorporated in every aspect of school life, and which is the main reason for our existence. The success of the school depends on a positive attitude from the pupils towards the Welsh Language. We boast Assembly members, Welsh Rugby and football capped players as our alumni. We are a caring school and put the wellbeing of our pupils and staff at the forefront of our activities and we pride ourselves on being one team #oneteamonefamily.
